The Praying Francis

O my Infant Jesus

 (part 11)

tender, little Child,

gentle and lovable,

for me You are all  the joy

that there is on this poor earth.

My heart rejoices in God

come to earth,

making Himself man,

a small baby.

my Infant Jesus,

that I might become

as You:

as little,

as poor,

as humble,

as simple

as You,

Each year, the memory of St. Francis’ outstanding devotion to the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God is renewed wherever a Christmas crèche scene is erected. Joined with the Little Poor Man’s tender love for the Word Incarnate and his desire to see it all as it really was on the night of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem was Francis’ impressive determination to bring forth Christ in his own life.

In his simple prayer to the Infant Jesus, we find a perfect blending of these basic elements of Franciscan spirituality. The sentiments the Seraphic Father has so movingly expressed invite us all to join him in asking the little Jesus, meek and humble of Heart, to make our hearts and our lives ever more conformed to His own. Then will the true spirit of Christ’s birth reign in the world all the year long!
